HOW TO CLEAN YOUR PAINTING TOOLS

Always clean your painting tools immediately after use. The process of cleaning your paint brush will vary depending on the type of brush and the type of paint.

How to Clean a Paintbrush

Use a stiff metal brush to scrape excess paint from the metal ferrule. Remove as much of the remaining paint as you can by painting onto sheets of newspaper. Cleaning oil-based paints:

To select the correct solvent, read the manufacturers instructions carefully. These will advise you on whether you should use mineral spirits or paint thinner for paint and varnish, denatured alcohol for shellac, etc.

Pour the solvent into a container and dip the brushes in. Work the solvent into the bristle brushes several times and shake the excess off. Continue this process with a clean container and new solvent.

Cleaning water-based paints:

Water based products are easier to clean. Place a simple solution of warm water and mild soap suds in a clean container and dip brushes into mixture. Work soap into brush bristles to ensure that all paint is removed. To finish, give the brushes a clear water rinse. This process may need to be repeated.

Once you have cleaned the brush of as much paint as possible, wash it in warm, soapy water, rinse and squeeze it back into shape. Wrap bristles in paper and secure with a rubber band.

Cleaning a paint roller:

It can be tempting to throw away a used roller cover after the job is done, but there is no need!

You can use a wet and spin roller washer as an easy to get it clean. Just put the roller into the container, connect the hose to a tap and within a few minutes the roller will be clean and ready to use again. It’s as easy as that!

If you don’t have a washer, simply remove the roller sleeve cover as soon as you have finished painting and clean immediately. Do not let the paint dry on the roller.
