protecting the floor

They may not be at the forefront of your renovation plans, but they will make all the difference to your completed room.

When carrying out the DIY task of refurbishing your skirting boards, it is vital that you protect the floor. Having to replace your carpet is a large expense that can be easily avoided by following the simple and quick process below;

1. Once you have sanded your skirting boards and are ready to paint, it is now time to think about protecting your carpet. You will need to gather the following, simple items;

  • Newspaper
  • Masking Tape

2. Taking the straight edge of the newspaper, place a piece of masking tape along it. Make sure that a third of the masking tape is adhered to the newspaper and two thirds are hanging over the edge.

3.Pick up the newly joined newspaper and masking tape. Butt the very edge of the tape right up to the skirting board. Once you are happy that there is no gap between the edge of the tape and the edge of the skirting, firmly press it down and make sure that it is stuck to the carpet.

4. Once you are sure that the newspaper and tape are firmly in place, simply move along the whole area that you wish to paint and repeat the process.

5. Now that the whole edge of the carpet along the skirting board is protected by the masking tape and newspaper, you can place the dust sheet over the top. By doing this you are ensuring that if the dust sheet does move, then your carpet is still protected. So, you can enjoy the process of renewing your room whilst being safe in the knowledge that you won’t have to fork out for a new carpet.

Following these quick and easy step will make sure that you can have a perfectly finished skirting boards, but discard the need to replace your whole carpet because of a nasty paint spill.
