WINDOWS: A TOP CLASS FINISH NEEDS A GREAT START

The next essential for a perfect finish is to choose the correct paint products for the job in hand and finally, a point which is often overlooked, is the decorating technique and surface preparation. This is what sorts out the professionals from the amateurs and the outstanding finish from the average.

Preparing a window for painting is not difficult and most amateur decorators hardly give the matter a second thought, perhaps only giving the surfaces a light rub down with sandpaper before brushing on the paint. They may then be disappointed with the results with paint marks on the window furniture, paint that does not adhere properly or a gloss finish which simply has no shine. Experienced professionals however will spend a little more time on the preparation stage and this not only greatly improves the quality of the finish but even saves time overall.

1) The first thing to do is to remove the window furniture. It is amazing how many people believe that it is quicker to paint around handles and window stays.

2) Before starting to prepare the surfaces for painting, the whole of the window and frame must be clean so a quick wash down is helpful and a brush will help to remove dirt and all traces of insects and webs (use our dusting brush).

3) The serious business of surface preparation can now begin and all loose or flaking paint must be removed. Hamilton make a wide range of suitable knives and scrapers to make the job easier. Any minor repairs to woodwork or window putties can be carried out at this stage and again we have the perfect tools for the job.

4) Sanding the existing surface is essential for good adhesion of the new paint and the best way to do this is with a medium grade “Wet or Dry” paper, used wet. This is much more effective than sanding dry as constantly putting the abrasive paper in water, continually cleans the abrasive surface keeping it working at full efficiency. It also results in a cleaner dust free environment.

5) A quick wipe down and the window is ready to paint!
